About Us

Who Are We?

Shanghai Queer Film Festival (SHQFF) is the first independent LGBTQ-themed film festival in Shanghai. Launched in 2016, we run a series of events every September to celebrate queer cinema and culture. As a non-profit organization, our team is run entirely by volunteers.

What Do We Do?

SHQFF hosts screenings and discussions of queer films, as well as film-related activities like practical workshops, parties, and forums. All of our events are open to the public for free.

Why SHQFF?

Our goal is to present local audiences with a variety of international queer films and to promote new works of queer shorts, especially those by young filmmakers. Through the power of film as a medium, we hope to enrich public understanding of LGBTQ culture, facilitate better conversations, encourage participation from the general public in our communities, and thereby create an LGBTQ-friendly social environment. In a city of blinding glitter and glamour, SHQFF aims to provide a platform for events that are in touch with the Chinese audience and to be the trendsetter for Shanghai’s LGBTQ communities.
