Generation Q | Queer generations under the shadows and out in the light
History is always on the move. As time goes by, we continually search for our authentic selves and the symbols that define each new generation.
Today, with the diversification of gender and sexual identities, the definitions of “queer” have multiplied as well. What kind of lives have queers of different generations lived? How have queer films changed over time? Compared with before, how have the social environments of queers on screen changed?
Today, we are pleased to announce the release of 2018 Shanghai Queer Film Festival theme, Generation Q. We invite you to explore the legacy of queer identities under the shadows and out in the light. As our key visual shows, through the cinematic interplay of light and darkness, we hope to uncover some of the vibrant, free faces that make up the queer community. At the same time, we gather to appreciate how over time and throughout history, independent, distinctive queer souls encounter each other and together create splendid works of contrasting shades.
We start from queer cinema, and aim to discuss the distinct queer characters from different generations in each film; we are going to witness the development of queer cinema through changes happened to queer characters on the screens; and we will start to understand the life and circumstances of queers through these films.
We look forward to witnessing all these happening – together with you. From September 21 2018, back for its second year, Shanghai Queer Film Festival will feature events and screenings of queer films from all kinds of cultural backgrounds for six days. There will be multiple events happening every day, and all events are FREE. We hope that through enriched discussions and screenings, you will be able to learn more about and gain a closer look at the life of the queer community. Let us look into the next Generation Q together.
